Another multiformat game has posted mostly comparable results on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, although once again Sony’s system seems to have the advantage – at least, until DIRT 5 receives further updates. Right now, the PS5 has a higher average resolution and improved texture filtering in the racer’s Image Quality mode, while it sees a significant increase in overall detail at 120 frames-per-second. In fact, the differences are so stark in the latter scenario that analysts Digital Foundry suspect this may be a bug.
It’s worth noting that, while the performance is mostly marginally better across the board on Sony’s new console, the lack of VRR support means you’ll get a cleaner refresh rate on Xbox Series X if you have a compatible television. This feature will be added to PS5 as part of a future firmware update, the company has confirmed.
So, it’s been a good start to the generation for multiformat games on PS5 – especially when Sony’s marginally weaker hardware was expected to come off slightly worse. Some are pegging the problem on Xbox Series X’s development environment, which is allegedly less mature than PlayStation’s. Either way, the differences between the two devices are frankly smaller than they’ve ever been, so we’re not sure how much this even matters anymore.

Very interesting that PS5 is holding it's and at times performing better then Series X. Makes wonder what Mark Cerny said about overclocking and not adding more cores ends up being far more efficient.
Yeah that’s a bug lmao, the grass on Xbox looks like a PS3 game. There’s no way that’s what the developers intended!
I would be tempted to buy this if I didn't think it would be a PS+ game at some point in 2021. I also really want Sony to get their finger out and do a proper "Forza Horizon" style Playstation exclusive. Thats the one area I feel Xbox has the upper hand.
@HMazzy111 Forza Horizon 4 is absolutely brilliant. One of the few games I have permanently installed on my laptop’s SSD despite being about 100GB, it’s just worth the space. Gran Turismo’s great and all but I really like the combination of arcade and simulation seen in Horizon with loads of customisable difficulty options for when I want to race properly or just mess about and turn my brain off. Shame Driveclub didn’t pan out.
Lol at the most powerful console, in the end it's ps5 that's more powerful 😂
Counting teraflops is the same as counting megapixel in smartphone camera. For example, just because galaxy note 20 ultra have 108mp camera doesn't means it's 9x better than the iphone 12 12mp camera, heck, that even doesn't means note 20 ultra has better camera than iphone 12.
ps. Also, I can even see the graphicals difference on my sort of 720p iphone xr, what's going on with this new xbox x machine??
Really like this game. It sometimes looks stunning . Wish they would add a replay mode.
One thing I missed in DF comparison, does the PS5 version use haptic feedback/adaptive triggers? I'd like to know if this improves the racing experience.
@HMazzy111 I agree. Forza is the only game I miss after switching to ps...
You forgot to add that the120hz mode is much better on Series X...with regards to framerate....
Strangely the PS5 has a bit better visual detail...but this may explain the better 120hz on Series X?
I think the game is still a few patches away from it's best.
What was it Phil spinster said? "The best looking, best playing games are on xbox" yeah no. Lol
Loving this at the moment on my PS5, all this crap power to power ratio is nonsense. Just wait until you play the games with dualsense. Xbox pad doesn't come close. Astrobot playroom demonstrates that:)
Also No Mans sky and Cod cold war, DMC5 runs better on PS5. Love how most are trying to defend Xbox saying patches will come blah blah. Where was this energy with PS4 Pro v Xbox One X comparrisons. I think most severely underestimated the PS5 capabilities and went purely by Teraflop count alone. The PS5 has overclocked GPU and a SSD that is best on any platform by some way and is performing way better than most predicted. If it was the other way and Series X was outperforming the PS5 we would see vids and articles everywhere. Full credit has to be given to Mark Cerny and his Team for designing a console with no bottlenecks.
@Axelay71 I remember you couldn't go anywhere without hearing wait until Digital foundry lol. Now its some of the most comical excuses in gaming ever.
@ThaBEN Yes it does mate.
@Steel76 @Steel76 So there's a bug for every multiplat then lol.
@ThaBEN https://youtu.be/DdYU-G_5lNE... one of the Devs goes into great detail on the haptics and adaptive triggers. Looks like they've spent a decent amount of time on this feature which is great.
@Max2574 I expect Digital Foundry will find something against ps5 soon. I always feel they are xbox fanboys deep down. To me personally the ps5 is incredible and its only just begun. I'm pretty sure the ps5 has some secret sauce that hasn't been revealed yet. Naughty dog will certainly show us what its truly capable of.
'especially when Sony’s marginally weaker hardware '
Maybe it's time to realise its never been 'weaker' but they just have different approach more so being consoles and not PC.
Yea I dont expect people to give up thinking they are more intelligent than Cerny though. 🤷♂️
I think the key takeaways are if your buying a new TV for 120 hz, you dont have to. The resolution these consoles are using to enable 120 hz aren't desirable. Performance modes will be 60 fps with fidelity 30 fps with Ray tracing going forward this gen. True 120 fps or 60 with Ray tracing will be the excuse for half step consoles this time round. Also the series S, for all the chat about scalability, is going to anchor multiplat game development if its popular. I had thought about getting one for gamepass but its performance in comparisons isn't great.
Unlike others, i think this is necessary comparison. Otherwise xbox fanboys will keep saying xbox x is more powerful (yes on paper on some aspects).
Surprised that, in IQ and resolution modes the PS5 comes out on top in both graphics and performance. Also surprised they turned the assets down in performance mode on Series X yet PS5 still keeps up with performance. Not sure if the PS5 is just better designed or devs just haven’t got a grip on the series X, but with identical tech that would be weird. Seems to be the case with most cross plat games at the moment though. The most interesting thing for me is the better texture and filtering detail on ps5 (perhaps a result of that much fast throughput?)
@Steel76 So does the bug include bad textures, bad lighting, bad framrate, lower resolution, missing details. As you going by Dirt 5 dev he also stated they are shocked by the PS5 SSD that it can load in textures almost acting as extra ram. And he also said the power difference gpu wise is not a big deal and that the SSD and over clocked GPU give PS5 advantages. Both consoles are awesome and both will be powerful and have great games. But you have to laugh at the Xbox Fanatics giving it large a few weeks ago lol. Now they are scrambling for excuses and harrasing devs. Just kinda funny how the narrative flips isn't it.
@ThaBEN it does but apparently not quite as pronounced as they could have been. I think the heptic in WRC is supposed to be the better of the 2 games.
The “inferior” hardware strikes again. When it comes to multiplat and you have a system like series S in your development, always GPU speeds will be more important, same as PC more cores doesn’t mean more performance. You need proper optimization to get the full potential and this doesn’t happen to often with 3rd party. Can’t wait to see what the other PS Studios do with PS5 later in it’s development cycle.
I’m torn now. I didn’t think I cared about 120 FPS. I thought 60 with better image quality was the route for me, but now having played in 120 FPS its hard to go back.
@Steel76 Off course they would mate. Its quite disturbing now how its not about the games no more. I would say it was a bug if all the other multiplats shown weren't the same. I think that PS5 SSD loads textures lightning quick.
@God_of_Nowt I think also Microsoft’s approach to unify development of Xbox games and PC through DirectX scalability is a pour choice. We all know the results are much better when you have development tools breed for one hardware . Sony knows it, Apple knows it
They are so disappointed at Xbox Series X subreddit....it's hilarious lol
@God_of_Nowt is the 'it's the tools' argument valid, or a deflection? Put another way, in say a years time when the APIs and tools etc are more mature, will the Series X outperform PS5 then or is it just the case that in the real world, PS5 is still likely to 'win' these kind of face-offs?
@AJDarkstar on Reddit there is even talk of a class action lawsuit against MS for describing it as 'the most powerful console in the world' pre-launch!
This sounds ludicrous, but it's worth noting that MS now describes it simply as 'the most powerful xbox' haha
@MPaulson difficult when your api scales across Xbox and PC. I think it will never reach its full potential. And most developers still working on DirectX 11.
@God_of_Nowt @SilkySmile89 Interesting. Turns out Cerny knew what he was talking about after all 👍
PS4 has been amazing for me as a Motorsport fan. Have no doubt PS5 will continue with that.
Dynamic resolution that bottoms at 1440p... I am in heaven. Awful last GEN dynamic resolution looked horrid on my TV.
My Switch in not even worth docking - it is so aggressive you end up with visual Mud. Also, Makes more sense to just save a bit more for the Digital PS5 than the XSS
@MPaulson custom is the way to go. Like @God_of_Nowt said before it has it's ups and downs but the end result will always be better. Sony apparently still has the best low level API out there, nothing on PC compares to that. Maybe Vulkan but it's not mainstream with developers and from what I understood, very difficult to code for. And most PC developers are working with DirectX for a long time and they will not make the transition so easily.
Wow, the Xbox comparison in that shot is so reminiscent of Halo Infinite lol.
As much as Playstation fans wanna shout "I told ya so" and "That Mark Cerny is a genius"... I think we need to take a step back and realize that what we are seeing definitely shouldn't be happening. The difference in texture, model, and environment quality should not be that bad... Especially when you consider that every other game asset quality have been the same for both PS5 and Xbox Series X. Not even on Xbox One was anything close to being that bad in AAA games... PS5 having a higher average resolution or high average framerate can definitely be related to the fast clocks. This is clearly a bug or glitch.
@Max2574 very true. There was a guy who kept posting on purexbox, saying that they couldn’t wait to see what digital foundry show & how the series x will kill the ps5. Absolute joke, I told the guy just to play the games & the differences would be minor. Currently the guy is on meltdown on purexbox 😂 There’s a few on purexbox who are like that, & I don’t understand why. Their just plastic boxes, I criticised Xbox 1st party games(at that time) & I was told to go back to pushsquare😂 Another person on there asked me 3 times within the week if I even had a Xbox. I told him 3 times that I had a one s. Absolute joke dealing with fanboys like that. Anyway, I really love digital foundry, such cool guys & they make great videos.
@Cyrus29 True mate although both sides have there nutters. Today I was truly shocked. A fake vid was done from the PS4 version of Dirt 5 and the guy posted a vid calling out Digital foundry and saying the PS5 version of Dirt 5 had the same graphical bugs. Digital foundry called him out and exposed the fake vid clearly using PS4 gameplay lol. That's a whole new level of fanboyism not only lying and faking a video but calling out Digital foundry saying they were wrong. Later apologised said he didn't realise and it was a mistake lol. Kind of disturbing the lengths some of these fanatics will go to. Again both consoles will be amazing especially for the price and Gamepass is amazing.
@Max2574 imo game pass is the best deal in gaming, represents fantastic value. I’ve also got ps now on aswell & for me that’s superb aswell. Yep, fanboys are crazy. That guy that you mentioned calling out digital foundry????? You wonder what the hell is going on in these peoples heads.
Don't take these early videos as evidence that one console is clearly more powerful than the other. This performance differential is unexpected and there's likely a good reason for it, and it likely does boil down to GDK issues and late dev kits on the Series X. Not all of the APIs are ready, even now. Last gen's mid gen refresh systems (Pro and One X) were more obvious out of the gate because they were basically just juiced up versions of existing hardware. The PS5 and Series X are very different to their respective predecessors and teething issues are expected - especially in the case of the Series X given that they're transitioning to an entirely new development environment.
I say this as someone with both a PS5 and a Series X. I love them both for different reasons, and if I'm honest right now I see the PS5 getting more use mostly due to the fact there's more actual good PS5 specific content.
@wiiware
I think a simple fix is to stand the xbox on a sheet of paper given so many people said it's more powerful on paper.
😀
@JJ2 thanks for the laugh. 😂😂😂
@JJ2 🤣🤣🤣
@nessisonett Forza Horizon 3 was better than 4 in all aspects of the game. Graphics, Music, hadling, etc...
this game IMO is far from next gen, it should be running just as well on a ps4 pro.....
This game has broken trophies on PS5, when they are supposed to pop they crash the PS5 and sometimes corrupt your save for you... happened twice to me before I checked PS Profiles to find not one person in the world has the platinum, as it is bugged......
